Beginning September 1, 2026, Humana became the administrator of the State of Texas Dental Choice PPO for the new ERS plan year. The plan is available to eligible State of Texas employees, retirees, and covered dependents. At Apolonia Smiles, we help ERS members understand and maximize their dental benefits. What Is the State of Texas Dental Choice PPO?
The State of Texas Dental Choice Plan is the PPO dental option available through the Employees Retirement System of Texas (ERS) and is administered by Humana. One of the biggest advantages of the PPO is flexibility. You can visit any licensed dentist, but you’ll generally receive greater savings when you choose an in-network dentist. Unlike the HumanaDental DHMO, the PPO does not require you to designate a primary care dentist. For the 2027 plan year (September 1, 2026–August 31, 2027), the plan provides substantial benefits for preventive and restorative dental care.
State of Texas Dental Choice PPO Benefits
Understanding your benefits can make it easier to plan your dental care and minimize your out-of-pocket expenses.
According to Humana’s 2027 ERS benefits guide, important in-network PPO benefits include:
- $0 deductible for preventive services
- Two routine cleanings per year
- Routine X-rays included as preventive care
- 90% coverage for covered basic services, including fillings
- 50% coverage for covered major services
- $2,000 annual plan maximum
- 40% extended annual maximum benefit for covered in-network services after the annual maximum is reached, excluding orthodontia
- 50% orthodontic coverage for adults and children, with a $2,000 lifetime maximum, including Invisalign®
- $50 individual / $150 family deductible for basic and major services
Humana lists simple extractions, periodontal maintenance and cleanings, root canals, crowns, bridges, and dentures among services in its major-services category.
Coverage is subject to plan provisions, eligibility, frequency limitations, exclusions, remaining benefits, and other plan requirements.
A Valuable Benefit: Coverage After Your $2,000 Annual Maximum
One particularly valuable feature of the State of Texas Dental Choice PPO is its extended annual maximum. The regular annual maximum is $2,000 per calendar year. However, reaching that maximum doesn’t necessarily mean your dental benefits are finished for the year. When you continue receiving covered care from an in-network dentist, the plan states that it will continue paying 40% of covered services after the annual maximum has been reached, excluding orthodontia.

✗ Uses set copays for dental services
Under the DHMO, services received outside the network are not covered and the patient is responsible for the full cost.
